Tech Tip for the Month: Rope Travel Part One
Climbing glaciers can be very dangerous. There are crevasses, sometimes steep, icy terrain, areas with rockfall and icefall. To ensure safety, mountaineers climb together connected to a rope. Rope travel is very important for mountaineers. Climbers must understand principles such as:
- Rope Management
- Utilizing the rope for communication
- Proper rope interval
- What side (uphill or downhill) is the rope generally on
- How to make corners properly
The best way to learn and perfect your rope travel is by getting out on glaciated terrain and climbing. However, if you haven't been out in awhile or not at all for that matter, you still can learn the fundamentals of rope travel.
